Black oxide finishing

Black oxide finishing is a wet chemical process, whereby a stable black iron oxide layer is created on an iron or steel surface. The intensity of the colour depends on the basis metal, the heat treatment and the mechanical treatment of the basis metal. A chemical reaction occurs when the item to be black finished is dipped in a hot alkaline oxidising solution at temperatures of approx. 145° C. Layers about 0.5 - 2.0 micrometres thick build up. The relatively low temperature of the treatment means previously hardened materials can be treated with no complications. If the workpiece is oiled after black finishing it will retain its resistance to corrosion.
